Basically it is a social security number, for the italian reader is "codice fiscale". It is a several digits number and it is released by the gemeente of the city you live in. It is used for a number of purposes among which taxes, wellfare, job contracts etc. You can stay 6 month without sofi, and i advice you to find a job first, so you don't have to pay taxes before you get a job.
